Automotive fuel tank manufacturer decreases changeover time

Background

TI Automotive, a world leading supplier of fuel systems, recently approached Piab to come up with an innovative way to improve automated handling of its complexly-shaped plastic fuel tanks. Piab worked with TI Automotive to optimize the design of the company’s current system, in which sudden acceleration was causing the tanks to break away from the suction cups and stop the manufacturing process.

Solution

TI Automotive installed P3010 COAX® vacuum pumps on each of the robot cells at each stage of the assembly process. The new pumps provided just enough suction and an optimum level of vacuum flow for the robot cell to safely pick and place the tanks.
